Since 1958, apple cider vinegar for acid reflux treatment has been the preferred option for many heartburn sufferers.

Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, is a symptom of a weak or improperly working lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle that is often treated with prescription or over the counter-the-counter drugs. Side effects and long-term use of these drugs can damage the body. A better alternative is using apple cider vinegar, also referred to as AVC.

Though not scientifically proven to work, it does seem to help a multitude of people.

There are several theories about how the cider relieves GERT. The main theory is based on the acetic acid in vinegar lowering the stomach’s hydrochloric acidity and thus increasing the stomach’s pH level. Assuming the LES is pH sensitive; this could explain why it is less likely to open if the pH level is higher.

Less severe cases of GERD or heartburn can be reduced or eliminated with 2-3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar taken before each meal and as needed.

Most people prefer to dilute the apple cider vinegar with an 8-ounce glass of water.

More severe occurrences of this ailment may require a tablespoon before each meal.

Those who are adamant about the positive results of ACV for GERD believe that the organic version is more advantageous due to the pasteurizing process of distilled vinegars killing the enzymes that are beneficial to the body.

In addition to reducing or even eliminating minor or severe heartburn, using apple cider vinegar for acid reflux has several other health benefits.

It has been known to help lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure. It can also aid in digestion in general; and has been known to help with allergies and skin complexions.

Others find using ACV helps with weight loss and reduction of arthritic pain. While many consider this home remedy an old wives tale, there are just as many if not more who regularly use apple cider vinegar to ease the pain of heartburn and GERD.
