The use of pavers to beautify your drive way or patio is one of the best options you can take as a homeowner. They are durable and in case of breakages, all that you need to repair is the broken section, not the entire floor. Many people hire a contractor to install pavers however, with good preparation and a bit of hard work, you can attain great results on your own. Here is a simple guide you can follow to do the installation.
The first step is ground preparation. Mark your target area and clear it. Excavate to a depth of 4 inches and get rid of the topsoil which leads to pavers’ breakages due to sinking of different parts after installation. Make your ground as firm as possible.
Set out adequate space if your target is a drive way and create a base of up to 8 to 12 inches. This will create a firm base to hold the weight of the vehicle without sinking. Lay gravel or crushed mine rock on your excavated area. The next step will be to flatten the gravel. Ensure that the spread gravel is compact and allow for a slight grade to prevent water from gathering on your driveway.
Use fine sand to fill in the spaces between the gravel and compact everything to ensure a strong base. Let the sand settle to a level of around 3/8 during the final compaction. Make the surface smooth.
The best way to start laying your pavers is from one end progressing to the last. Start the pavers’ placement from one corner heading to the other. To ensure uniformity, use a string line to guide your line so that all the pavers are in a straight line and well aligned. Use a 2 by 4 hammer to make any adjustments. This will save you time.
The final step is the installation of the edger. Use the edge that came with your pavers for best results or treated lumber. This will hold the pavers together. Finally, sprinkle sand over the pavers and compact them. Sweep the excess sand and if you want, you can apply a sealer to enhance the color and give a wet look.
