So you’ve been chatting with somebody online for awhile now, and it’s finally time to meet.  This can be an extremely nerve-wracking experience even though you already know a little bit about your potential true love.  Transitioning from the online world to the real world doesn’t have to be a daunting experience.

You should regard your time already spent together as an advantage since you aren’t going in completely cold.  And if you have followed the advice of good online dating tips, then you should already know what each other looks like.  Therefore it should simply be a matter of getting together to see if you can replicate the online magic in real life.

Sometimes it works out, and other times it doesn’t but here are some online dating tips to give you the best odds possible.

1.  Remember that once you move into the real world, a first date is essentially the same no matter how you meet the other person.  So that means that the basic rules apply such as making sure to show up on time, and confirming your plans beforehand.

2.  Be realistic about the situation.  It might be hard, but it helps to keep an even-keel approach when it comes to meeting someone in real life for the first time.  If your expectations are too high then there is a good chance that you might end up disappointed.  And similarly, if you have no faith that you will actually make a connection, then there will be little point in meeting in the first place.

3.  Pick a location for your first date that is casual, neutral, and fun.  Some people make the mistake of going the romantic route to quickly, thereby making things potentially uncomfortable.  If you two get along then by all means you can have an expensive romantic dinner down the line.  But for the first date, it might be wiser to go for a simple cup of coffee and have a good conversation.

What should you talk about?  Now it’s time to move on from emails and Internet messages, into the world of real interpersonal interaction.  You can talk about anything, but of course the most obvious subject will be what it’s like to meet someone in-person after only knowing their online persona.  You can share a laugh at how exciting and possibly silly the whole situation is.  Sometimes it’s good to acknowledge how awkward it might be, and once that is done the tension will be relieved and you can proceed with business as usual.  Just have fun with the situation, and have a little bit of faith reserved for the fact that this first meeting is potentially the start of something wonderful.
