If you’re struggling with an older cover for your futon or you are having a hard time putting your new one on, you may be missing something – stretch!
Putting on covers is actually supposed to be quite easy. Just by the name alone you can see that they are called ‘slipcovers’ – meaning that they just slip right on.
However, this term can also be a little misleading as it indicates that the mattress just floats in there, without any effort. This is far from the case if you have a normal slipcover.
When putting a new cotton cover on your futon mattress, you know it isn’t just that easy. There is a work involved, although the process itself is not complicated.
In most cases, on a quality futon cover, there are zippers made of a durable brass and the teeth are made to open and close easily. It is just that the material, which is normally either a heavier cotton, like a canvas, or can be more delicate, like a silk or microsuede does not give.
If you choose a cover with stretch, like the one pictured with Spandex, you will have a much easier time of it. As these are low cost and can be changed so easily, you might even think of changing colors with the seasons.
Most futon covers slip over the mattress itself and close with the zippers mentioned.
In some cases, there are slits that overlap and this is what allows the cover to stay on. This is mostly true of older styles, however. Even with the newer prints and materials, like organic cotton and hemp, even bamboo, the zipper is the most common variety.
Of course, there is always some difficulty depending on the size of your futon as well. If you have a smaller, twin or even futon chair, taking the covers off and on is much simpler. Get into a queen and king size mattress and it gets not only heavier, but just more to manage and then the stretch factor becomes more and more important.
It is always worth the tradeoff for battling with any futon slipcovers as it means you can change the look of your space in no time, even if it is slightly harder than you imagined.
