How to get a cheaper plane ticket for your next trip

cheap travel book

How To Go Almost Anywhere For Almost Nothing

Like many people I’m continually looking for methods to help save money on my next getaway. One of the most expensive parts of any getaway is the airplane journey.

The thing is that there are many great bargains around for everyone traveling on a budget but you do want to know what to watch out for.

I know plenty of people purchase paying with a credit card because it means if your air carrier overbooks the ticket or possibly if the air carrier goes bankrupt you are certain to get your money back.

Then again if you take it one step further and register for the air carriers private credit card you may get free air miles for every single purchase you make with it.

Many air fare websites routinely check a variety of various extras after you purchase, for example luggage insurance is generally built on without even checking with you first!

Also beware of other fees which you do need to pay for such as air-port taxes and also check in costs which can be hidden until the end of the purchasing process.

Remember a large number of comparison Internet sites don’t incorporate everything that you must pay for.

Lots of booking web sites at the moment are offering all inclusive promotions where they provide for the hotel with the air travel factored into a deal however these deals are really only obtainable for well known tourist destinations.

Having said that if you’re looking at cheap hotels in any country it could be worthwhile checking using a web-site such as Travelocity or Expedia as they definitely have a lot of great bargains.

Checking in on the Internet could save you a lot if you’re flying using a European airliner and they’ll typically provide the option once you book. Having said that don’t forget should you forget to check in on the net you will need to pay up to $25 to do this at the airport.

Always remember you cannot assume all hotels have got Internet access so plan in advance.

So thats my favorite techniques for obtaining low-cost plane tickets, I hope they will help you to pick the perfect flight.

Haad Yuan Beach on Koh Phangan

Thai Islands and Beaches book

Eyewitness Guide : Islands and Beaches of Thailand

There are over 20 beaches to choose from when you visit the tropical island of Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand. The choice can be somewhat overwhelming.

The temptation is to pick a popular beach such as Haad Rin, Ban Tai, Bottle Beach, Haad Yao or Thong Nai Pan Noi. All of these beaches I’ve just mentioned are stunning, but if you want to experience the original Koh Phangan beach vibe then there is no better place than the small beach of Haad Yuan.

Haad Yuan is a small bay tucked into the south east coast of Koh Phangan. It is just 5 km from the party destination of Haad Rin; and yet what a difference those 5 km make! Haad Yuan is accessible by either a narrow jungle footpath from Haad Rin or Haad Thian East or by longtail taxi boat.

There is no road to Haad Yuan and this is a big part of the charm of Haad Yuan. It is a remote spot for those who want perfect peace and relaxation. There is no noise of day trippers on motorbikes and there definitely isn’t any all night techno parties.

There are no parties because Haad Yuan isn’t connected to the mains power supply. In the evening there are a few hours of electricity provided by generators. They are normally shut down early when the Thai proprietors to the bungalow operations decide to go to bed.

Haad Yuan is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It has fine white sand, clear blue waters and is fringed by coconut palms. At both ends of the bay are rocks and behind the beach is thick jungle offering a number of trails to explore.

The accommodation on Haad Yuan mostly consists of basic fan bungalows on the beach that used to be everywhere over the island before Koh Phangan re-invented itself as an up-market tourist destination. When you stay at Haad Yuan it is the beach that is the focus of the holiday, not being pampered in a luxury resort.

The only concession to the 21st Century on Haad Yuan is one mid-range resort called Centara Pariya. It has a number of concrete bungalows and a small pool. The resort is at the end of the beach and the accommodation is hidden in the tree line.

So why not stay at Haad Yuan? It might not be the height of luxury but it is the height of beauty.

13 Ways to Save Money on a Trip to Paris

Paris travel guide

Just came back from a 4 day trip to Paris this week and thought I would jot down a few observations for others on a budget. Great place to go for a short break (or even a longer one) by the way.

1. Eating out is expensive in Paris so make the most of any good weather you have and create a fabulous picnic from the wonderful foods from the local charcuterie and patisserie or even the small supermarkets dotted around everywhere that the locals use.

2. Spending time in pavement cafes is part of the fun and you pay for your “ringside seat”. Expect to pay 10 to 15 euros for two soft drinks or beers and five euros for a coffee – more on upmarket avenues like the Champs Elysees. If the weather is hot, use this a treat, not as a means of quenching your thirst and buy bottled water to carry with you from the local supermarket at less than a euro a bottle.

3. If you love to people watch, do it for free in the wonderful parks where beautifully dressed Parisiens can be seen strolling especially at the weekend. My favorite place for this was the Jardin de Luxembourg – beautiful surroundings, plenty of available chairs and popular with Parisiens!

4. Getting to and from the airport can take a huge bite out of your holiday budget with cabs around 60 euros a time. However you can do as we did and take the local RER service at less than 9 euros from Charles de Gaule airport to Central Paris (less from Orly I think). The service starts early – around 5 am if you need to catch an early flight – we took the RER from St Michel Notre Dame at 5:24 am on Thursday and it was quite busy – not as scary as we thought it might be! Course you have to travel light to do this so you can easily get you bag on and off the train. There are also night buses going all through the night. Details at transilien.com which has all the information you need (in English) about public transport in Paris.

5. Choose a hotel (like ours Le Petit Belloy (Trip Advisor gave it good reviews which is why we chose it)) where breakfast is included as a croissant, coffee and juice might set you back 10 euros a time in a pavement cafe and that soon adds up. Our hotel included free Internet access, a welcome glass of champagne, breakfast (up to 10:30) and afternoon snack (served 5:30pm and 8:30pm) every day and meant we could eat a big lunch out (usually cheaper than dinner) and just have the snack offered a couple of days. Other days we splashed out and ate dinner out and didn’t bother with the snack.

6. Don’t go and see every single tourist attraction. Be selective. Trying to see everything will exhaust you anyway. Many of them have long queues too and you will spend a lot of time waiting. See the Eiffel Tour but do you really need to pay and wait for an hour to climb it? Enjoy it better from a distance. Check a guide book before you go and limit yourself to the essential. You can always come back another time! Who wants to make any trip to Paris their last trip to Paris?

7. You can buy a card which covers entry to a number of museums in one go. Just make sure you want to visit them all. We bought a day passport at Versailles which was 25 euros but we didn’t go and see everything as we had museum fatigue after a while.

8. Avoid organized tours. We paid 3 euros each way to Versailles on the RER plus 25 entrance to everything including a special musical fountain display (18 euros on days when this is not on). The tours we saw (by bus) were charging 79 euros for a 4 hour visit.

9. Avoid the hawkers selling tacky souvenirs. Will you really appreciate that blue metallic Eiffel Tour when you get home?

10. Take comfortable shoes, buy a good map of central Paris and walk. If you have a good central hotel, many of the attractions are within walking distance of each other. Although you can buy a tourist card for one or several days covering all inner Paris transport, it is even cheaper to walk and you will work off a bit of all that delicious food. For the odd trip by public transport, you need to buy a book of 10 tickets, which is a lot cheaper than buying ten individual metro tickets. Each one will take you anywhere in central Paris, with as many connections as you like and lasts for 2 hours after you validate it.

11. Shopping in Paris is not cheap, though there are some wonderful little shops and some swanky department stores with clothes and prices to make your eyes water. But even quite ordinary stuff seemed to be twice as expensive as the UK which probably means three times as expensive as the US. Fair enough if you fall in love with a special dress or sweater or something but don’t buy stuff you can get at home far cheaper.

12. Our “local” supermarket had wonderful flavors of upmarket French chocolate in beautiful packaging – ideal gifts and far cheaper than the airport offerings.

13. Service is included in all restaurant and cafe bills by law. We were tipping 10% until we found out that this is ridiculously high in Paris and you should just round up to the nearest euro or leave a few euros for exceptionally good service.

If you’re looking forward to the summer season and enjoying the outdoors with friends and family, there is probably one gloomy aspect that invades your thoughts of those good times grilling and hanging out around the fire during a camping trip – mosquitoes.

Though tiny creatures they are, mosquitoes wield the power to ruin any potentially fun camping trip with persistent and unforgiving itchy biting. Don’t let these pesky insects ruin your fun! With a little know-how and some insect-fighting tools, you can once again reclaim the joys of the outdoors.

A lot of people don’t like the idea of spraying chemicals on their body to repel insects, but luckily there are natural alternatives.

Plants like citronella, catnip, lemon thyme, and rosemary are natural irritants to mosquitoes and other insects, and these plants will grow in your yard.

Simply rubbing the leaves on your skin is sufficient in creating a natural repellent that can last a couple hours. You can even make your own insect spray by mixing the oils of these plants in a water solution and then pouring it in a spray bottle to carry with you on the go.

Another solution to your mosquito problem is insect repellent clothing. This clothing technology is a godsend to the outdoors enthusiasts plagued by the mosquito insect. How these products work is by utilizing Permethrin, a man-made version of a natural insect repellent found in chrysanthemum plants, and synthesizing it tightly into fabric fibers; resulting in an effective, odorless mosquito repellent solution that you can wear. These types of clothing also give the added benefit of repelling other insects such as ticks and ants, so they serve as an excellent option.

Along with your natural homemade mosquito spray and clothing repellent, you can add a portable mosquito trap to your arsenal. These technological devices will give you the added protection that will serve to allow you to enjoy the outdoors without the itchy annoyance. Using different methods like these in conjunction with one another is the best way to avoid having to deal with these creatures. Don’t let those darn mosquitoes win, get yourself updated on the latest technology to battle, and win, against those insects!

Altea, Alicante For A Wonderful Holiday

Lonely Planet Country Guide Spain (Lonely Planet Spain)

Lonely Planet Country Guide Spain (Lonely Planet Spain)

Altea, Alicante is situated in a steep hillside, only a short distance away from the Mediterranean Sea. It is an hour car drive from Alicante International Airport via the N-332. It is a ten minute drive from Benidorm, the party town of Alicante. Although tourism has proliferated in the region, Altea remains to be a picturesque locality with its rugged mountains and beautiful bay. Another reason for choosing this wonderful town is that the hotels are reasonably cheap. For instance, you can get an Altea hotelduring the high season for a much better price than you would pay in the larger cities such as Alicante itself.
Why should you choose Altea for your holiday?

Culture

The fame of Altea for its cultural heritage is one reason for visiting this place. This town has been a popular retreat for many artists, sculptors and writes. Altea has one good concert hall and it is the home of the University of Culture and Fine Arts. You would choose this place to know why it was called the Cultural Capital of the Valencian Region.

From the City Centre to the church

The City Centre is a nice starting point to have a walk and discover the amazing history of a Spanish town. The white washed buildings are representations of the culture that Altea boasts of. As you start strolling along the cobbled medieval lanes, you will pass and admire the white-washed buildings – all adorned with different flowering plants like jasmine. In the City Centre, you will find many shops and art and craft galleries where you can buy souvenir items. There are many restaurants around serving local and international dishes.

Continuously walking up along the lanes, you will reach the most beautiful spot in Altea. You can watch the spectacular view of the bay with the mountains at the backdrop. As you reach the top, you behold the little square all-lined up with cafes, restaurants and more shops. Most locals spend time in this place savoring the famous tapas and vino blanco (white wine).

Also, at the top of the cobbled lanes, you will come to the famous landmark of Altea – the blue-domed church of Virgen de Consuelo. To reach this place, all you have to do is continue walking upwards following the signs “Poble Antic” and you will be guided by the sight of the blue dome. The church is beautiful inside and out, with its murals, sculptures and stained glasses.

The beach

Altea, like the other towns and cities in the Costa Blanca, is visited because of the beaches. Though sandy, the beach of Altea is a place to waddle and lie for a few hours of sun-bathing. Down the seaside, you will come across the promenade where again, you will find different shops, cafes and restaurants.

Festivals

Altea is no different from the other Alicante towns as far as festivals are concerned, particularly the celebrated Moors and Christians festival. This festivity re-enacts the victory of the Christians over the Moorish settlers in this part of Spain. This is an occasion where people are dressed in colorful costumes and they parade in the town. Another festival well observed in Altea is the Castell de L’Olla. This is the feast of San Lorenzo and the celebration is highlighted by thousands of fireworks held on display by the sea.

There are more other places to see in Altea. Or – from Altea you can have a brief visit to the famous city of Benidorm – with the nightlife and skyscrapers.

A memorable holiday can be spent here in Altea, Alicante. The place itself is worth the visit and as an add-on, you can go and explore the neighboring towns and cities for a greater taste of Costa Blanca culture.

Is Your Medical Coverage Adequate For Overseas Travel?

Safe Overseas Travel

Safe Overseas Travel

When planning a trip to a country outside of the United States it is prudent to assume that your current private medical insurance that is working well for you in the United States will not be adequate nor even something that you can use internationally. You should consider including in your preparation for international travel the possibility of needing medical care while you or your family are outside the United States. Chances are, your choice of health insurance was made based on the assumption that you will get sick or have an accident that requires you to invoke its financial coverage for medical services received inside the United States.

Before your embark on your international trip is the time to think about, investigate and choose global medical insurance that meets your assumptions about the possibility of needing medical while you or your family are outside the United States – and the assumptions you make about global medical care should include some additional items that you don’t have to think about when choosing health insurance coverage for when you are at home.

To get started, it helps to base your assumptions for global medical care on the medical services you might need instead of simply considering financial coverage for medical care abroad.

For example, you may have global financial coverage with an indemnity health insurance plan but how will you know to find and select a doctor or hospital or other medical service in a foreign country – one you may be visiting for the first time? How do you find a doctor that can speak English? Can you be assured that the doctor you use will accept your insurance coverage in lieu of payment at the time services are performed? What about a dental accident? Same thing – where do you find the right dentist for your foreign visit situation? Also – what if you needed medical evacuation back to the United States?

Once you understand the possible medical scenarios you could find yourself or a family member in while visiting a new country, search for companies that provide global medical services, not just indemnity coverage for fees while you are out of the United States. Look for a global medical services plan that provides 24 hour, 7 days a week customer support that is responsive and caring. Ask if there is a network of doctors, hospitals and other medical service providers where you can be assured that you will not have to pay the fees for services upfront and out of your pocket. Understand how medical evacuation back to the United States would be handled and what costs you would be out of pocket and when you would have to pay.

In summary, a vacation overseas doesn’t mean that your possibility of serious illness or major accident will take a vacation too. Think about the medical situations that are possible for you and your family and look for services that can respond like you need to these. From there, you can at least make an informed decision with your family about the medical risks you are willing to take when compared against the cost for global medical services that could be made available while traveling internationally.

A large number of Alicante flights arrive at Alicante airport every day due to the popularity of the province amongst tourists.

If you plan to travel to the Costa Blanca in Alicante, the best choice would be Alicante airport because of its closeness to most of the cities and towns.

However, if you would like to choose something less expensive and more in the range of your budget, you might consider cheap Alicante flights that land in other airports like the El Altet airport.

The Alicante region has many beautiful cities and towns that have become a growing tourist spot for international visitors.

One of these is the town of Monforte del Cid. Located in the Costa Blanca, it is near the sea and thus provides excellent opportunities for many beach activities. Only 25 minutes away from the Alicante airport, the town of Monforte del Cid is a historical town that bears traces of its rich past in the buildings and archeological remains that can be seen here.

Additionally, many of the town’s buildings are remnants from its diverse history and many rulers. An area of the town known as the Old Town is a symbol from the times when the Arabs and Christians lived together before the Moors were evicted by the Christian rulers.

Many other buildings in the town are the center of tourist’s interest due to their architecture and style.

Monuments dating from the Roman, Arab and Christian times tell the story of the town’s history. The church dedicated to the patron saint of the town, The Virgen de Orito, is a wonderful example of Renaissance architecture.

Whether you plan to stay in the town or in one of its neighbors, you should devote some time from your schedule to visit this town and enjoy its offerings.

A Tour in Alicante’s Monuments and Buildings

Spain (Eyewitness Travel Guides)

Spain (Eyewitness Travel Guides)

Alicante in Spain is full of interesting things to do and see throughout the year.

The beauty of coming to Alicante for your vacation is that you are nearly guaranteed to have the sun throughout the year so there is no reason for you not to get out and about and see wonderful monuments and buildings that Alicante city and province had to offer.

The problem in the province in general is that there is a large lack of public transportation so renting a car is absolutely essential. Luckily, like the Spanish economy in general, the cost of car hire in Alicante is relatively cheap.

Most people take a car rental at the airport. Once you have picked up your vehicle, here are some of the interesting monuments and buildings that you can visit.

Ayuntamiento

The city hall of Alicante in located in Plaza de Ayuntamiento and was finished in 1760. Inside the building on the first floor of the building is a metal disc which indicates the sea level and it is usually used to measure Spain’s height of the sea level.

Castillo de Santa Bárbara

The castle looms high on the summit of Mount Benacantil. The archaeologist believed that this is the site of an Iberian fort. You will also get a good glimpse of the city and the blue sea. You can reach the Santa Barbara Castle by car or by a lift which is located on the beach of Postiguet.

Castillo de San Fernando

A historic site which was never completed is atop of the Tossal hill. The place has been completely destroyed and its remains were turned into a venue for sports and other activities.

Isla de Tabarca

This natural monument is part of the town of Valencia which was formerly used as a refuge by pirates. The waters which surround the island are also included in the Marine Reserve and the island gained a special recognition as a Historical Artistic Monument.

Monasterio de la Santa Faz

The monastery was completed in 1766, and is located in the Village of Santa Faz. The architectural style of the monastery is a mix of renaissance and baroque architecture. It made a special place in the history as the relic from the time of Christ was said to be kept in here on a pilgrimage in 14th century.

Palacio Gravina

This building has been around since the 18th century. This interesting site also holds cultural events and exhibitions and has been home to the provincial Archives which are regulated by the provincial council.

The sights in Alicante are really interesting and spectacular. It never ceases to surprise a large number of tourists how these buildings and monuments made a significant mark in the history of Alicante.
