Great Patchwork Quilts for Sale

If you live in a climate that has cold months, you know you need quilts and blankets to stay warm. It’s not an option, it’s a need. However, you don’t need to spend a whole lot of money to keep you and your family toasty during winter. There are ways to find patchwork quilts for sale which will not only add warmth to your bed, but to the room as well.

A patchwork quilt serves not only as a blanket, but a cover for the bed during the day. It’s important to find something you’ll be happy with all day long, something that adds to the room and works to keep you warm at night.

Many quilts are hand made with loving care or are put together by crafts people and designers at great expense. Don’t be daunted by the thought, though, it’s not necessary to take up needlework or put a huge dent into your pocket book. And you don’t have to settle for a low quality quilt.

Probably the best source of good deals these days is the Internet. You can find machine made patchwork quilts which are a good deal cheaper than the handmade designer kind but they often look as good. You can also buy imported quilts which are lower in price due to the labor costs abroad and these may give you what you are looking for.

The Internet is a fast and relatively easy way to find the average price for a patchwork quilt and get a good deal. It’s also the place to find overstocked items, meaning you can get high-end products on sale. You can shop on line even during the ‘off season’ months, which is when you also get sales from last year’s stock.

Apart from the Internet, there are ways to find sales in stores. The bigger the store, often the bigger the sale and the bigger the selection of patchwork quilts on offer.

While it might not be something you’d look forward to storing, buying at the end of winter to save for next winter is the time to get sales as stores work hard to get rid of stock. What they don’t want to store works well for you as you’ll have the quilt you want come winter again. Knowing what the original price was or should be can help you decide if the sale is a good enough bargain for you or not.

Although you might not find a brand new quilt, looking at garage sales or flea markets can bring you to some vintage quilts, and especially with patchwork, that’s a great look to go for, so long as the quilt is still in good condition, looks sharp, and will keep you warm.

No need to seriously hurt your wallet shopping for quilts. Look out for patchwork quilts for sale with some patience and ingenuity and you won’t be disappointed.

Using Color in the Bedroom

Bedrooms Creating and Decorating the Room of Your Dreams

Bedrooms : Creating and Decorating the Room of Your Dreams

We all get tired of the same old bedroom decor. When the time comes to update the look, maybe it is time to think color.

Nothing sparks the decor like a bright color. However, most of us are not mentally prepared to decorate our homes with purple or orange, red or hot pink.

Walls in colors that are too bright will not only make the rooms look smaller, the colors will also create a feel of energy. Buzzing with energy is not for the bedroom. Instead, the room should be inviting and relaxing.

Assuming the walls are a neutral color in the bedroom selecting a bright bedding could be a good idea.

Most bedrooms are an off white, especially for those who rent.  Landlords feel safe painting everything Navajo White.

To brighten up the room, one could select orange bedding.  It is important to remember that orange comes in many shades, not always the color of the fruit.  A nice peach color will soften the look, but not add the kick that may be desired.

Perhaps, the best selection for the hum-drum bedroom is to select black and cream bedding

By selecting the combination with cream rather than white, the bedding will better blend with the neutral decor.  Stark white in the ensemble could make the walls look dingy.

Of course, black and cream will not add that sparkle of color to the bedroom.  All that is needed to make the bedroom complete is to select a bright accent color.  This could be the time to select orange, the bright orange that is the color of the fruit.  If orange is not the color of choice, perhaps a crimson red or a hot pink would suffice.  Whatever the selection, the accent color should be used sparingly such as with throw pillows or a cotton blanket across the foot of the bed.

The real advantage to updating with black and cream as the basic bedding is that the room can take on as many looks as one desires by changing the accent color from season to season.

The Best Cotton Comforter Sets

cotton comforter sets

There is a reason that cotton is a popular choice for bedding. It is so easy to care for. Most comforter sets, sheets, and other linens made of the material can be tossed in a washing machine and tumbled dry. This is almost a priceless selling point for today’s busy mom. Cotton is also smooth and comfortable, and absorbs perspiration, keeping you from freezing in winter and melting in summer.

One of the most important things to look for when shopping for bedding is the material used, and how it is made. A good cotton or cotton blend with a high thread count and a percale weave is the best for the money. Percale refers to material that is woven together with one thread running horizontally to each vertical thread, and a thread count of 180 or higher. The thread count refers to how many threads are woven in per square inch.

A thread count over 200 is usually a good buy, as this means the bedding will be fairly smooth and comfortable, and very durable. 300 to 400 is the most popular range, as it combines a luxurious feel and is still durable enough for normal use and care. Thread counts of 500 or more are often very expensive, hard to care for, and more delicate than the others.

Cotton comforter sets come with all kinds of options. There are bed in bag sets that usually (not always, so check the packaging for a list) include a comforter, a bed skirt, a sheet set, and pillow shams. Some even come with throw pillows, pillow cases, and other extras. Other basic comforter sets include a comforter and some pillow shams. Make sure you know what you’re taking home before you spend your money.

Even with the entire bedding set included in one package, it’s always a good idea to but a couple of extra sheet sets and pillowcases. You’ll need to wash them more often than the comforter and bed skirt, so having extras means you’re always ready with a fresh set in reserve. Pick different, but coordinating colors for a change of scenery without a whole room makeover.

A reversible comforter is often a great choice because you get to have a choice of two colors in one, or a color and a print. Depending on your mood, you can change the look of a whole room just by flipping over one blanket!

Cotton comforter sets range in price from fair and reasonable to more than a house payment. Always look for the material. Thread count is more important than price tag. If you find a color you like with a reasonable price and a high thread count; you can forget the designer labels and brand names. A comforter set is only as valuable as it is comfortable.

Green Lighting : CFLs vs. LEDs

CFL light bulbs

Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) were invented more than a century ago but such is the nature of consumer demand and technology that neither type of revolutionary light bulb came on the market until comparatively recently.

Both types of light are far superior to the standard incandescent lights still found in many homes today.

Since the age of Global Warming and fears of resource scarcity, CFL and LED light bulbs have gained prominence. They are now seen as important for green interior design and the future sustainability of modern society.

Incandescent light bulbs are a great example of inbuilt obsolescence. They are designed to break after 1,000 hours of use. Plus, more of the electricity used by incandescent light bulbs gets turned into heat rather than light, making them incredibly inefficient.

It is thus no surprise that other technology has come to surpass the incandescent light bulb in performance.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs have a similar spectrum to the naked eye to regular light bulbs and yet they use 75% less electricity and last 8,000 hours.

CFLs are now made in all sizes and come in all watt strengths. Energy Star calculates that changing just 5 incandescent light bulbs for CFLs in a home saves the home owner $100. CFLs are not that much more expensive than incandescent light bulbs to buy and they are widely available.

The only problem with CFLs is mercury.

Although companies such as Earthmate have sought to make CFLs low in mercury, it still remains a serious concern regarding the safety of the light bulb. Mercury is rated as the third most serious pollutant in America by the US Department of Environmental Protection.

That is the great benefit of LEDs. They do not contain any mercury. They also outlast all other light bulbs: LEDs typically have a lifespan of 25,000 to 100,000 hours.

The only drawback is that LEDs are dim. Scientists are struggling to come with a commercially viable way of making LEDs cheap and bright. All the time advances are being made, but as yet LED technology is still very much in its infancy.

3 Closet Organization Tips To a Clutter Free Closet

Shop Your Closet: The Ultimate Guide to Organizing Your Closet with Style

Shop Your Closet: The Ultimate Guide to Organizing Your Closet with Style

You have a large number of clothes, most of them new or barely used, a large number of shoes you rarely wear and a huge set of accessories and you have no clue where you got from.

Does this scenario sound too familiar? Of course it does to approximately half of the population. So many of us are hoarders, me included and hate throwing anything away that might come in useful in the future.

Recently I found out that the main use of one closet seems to be for stashing junk and nothing more. That’s when I realized I really need to get help with closet organization . Otherwise, I will have to deal with a crowded room once the closet is full.

You will find closet organization ideas all over the web. All these articles are geared toward one goal – living a clutter-free life. ut hopefully you will find a few new tips here as far as closet organization is concerned.

What Do I Want With the Closet?

First, you have to establish a plan for the closet. What is it that you want to see in it – clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, linens? How are you going to pull it off? You will need a concrete plan with all the specifics. It is at this point where you will need to sit down and think about the purchases and changes you are going to make.

Do I Need All This Stuff?

Pull out all of the things in your closet and try sorting them out into 4 piles – for charity, for trash, for repairs and for giving away. Things which have to go have to go. Try to let go of the attachment. Otherwise, you will be stuck hoarding everything you buy and you’ll never have enough room – unless you want to stop buying anything at all. You may need to have a “one in, one out” policy whenever you buy anything new to keep on top of this.

How Will I make This Easier For Me?

Look for a way of organizing which will make your life easier in almost every sense. For example, you might want to consider classifying your clothes in accordance to the frequency of their use or to put like colors together so it is easier to grab the right color in the mornings (from she who went work in one black and one navy shoe).

Problems with Snow Blowers

snow blower

CLICK the IMAGE for a great selection of low cost snow blowers

When its time to clean up after a snow storm the most successful method has been proven to be the snow blower. Of course, you can argue with a man and a shovel but it won’t do as good a job as a snow blower.

There are many different snow blowers on the market. There is John Deere, Toro and a host of others. Within each brand there are generally two kinds.

For example: With the Toro brand there are gas snow blowers and then there are the less expensive Toro electric snow blowers that you have to use with a long cord.

There is also the skid steer loader that you use with one of the mini skid steer attachments to get a nice clean driveway as well.

If you are using an electric snow blower, one of the biggest problems you can have with it is the cord. They are cheaper than the gas blowers which is why people buy them and they don’t give the same kind of trouble that gas ones can give you in cold weather.

What can happen however, with an electric blower is that you can ride right over the cord, severing the connection which is a pain in the neck. Another thing that can happen is that the cord can get wound around the bushes and trees in front of your home making it very difficult to extricate the machine. Make sure you are always aware of the position of the cord when you operate your snow blower.

When you have a gas blower some of the problems you can have is that it can get difficult to start on a cold day. You have to pull the cord the way you have to do it with a lawn mower and it sometimes can take a while to get started.

Another problem that you can run into is when the snow is wetter than usual whatever type of blower you have. In that case you have to clear the chute over and over again and will take you a lot longer to finish your job. All in all, though it is worth to have a blower than not to if you experience a lot of snow in winter.

L Shaped Bunk Beds

If you have more than one child sleeping in a room, more times than not, space becomes a bit of a challenge.

That, combined with the need to not only provide beds for each child, but storage space for their things creates the need to be a little creative in order to make your children’s room a pleasant and fun place to be.

One solution is the L shaped bunk bed, which provides several needs in one and also, at the same time looks great!

The difference between a regular bunk bed and the L apart from the L shaped formation is that it works not only as a bed, but often as cupboard and storage space as well.

Although it’s not as space efficient as a typical twin over twin bunk bed, because of the shape, if you see that you are eliminating the need for extra cabinets, you will see it can still give you more free space in the room.

Some models come with a desk built in, which is also a space saver. Though not all models come with the cabinets or desk built in, the most effective ones are the ones that use the space carefully without looking cluttered.

Depending on the size of your room, you can get these beds in single-bed twin size, or even queen size or a combination of two different sizes. These beds can be custom made according to your need, but many manufacturers offer a variety of L’s that you can choose from. Some beds have the option that allows you to choose where you put the bottom bed, making it more like a T than an L depending on what suits you best.

Think about the color you need, the amount of storage space, shelves, drawers, or a desk combo, and then you can search and probably find something that suits your needs in the furniture stores in your local area.

There are many options online as well, even if it’s just to get ideas of what to look for or how to custom make it.

Having siblings that sleep together can be fun and is often an option that requires some innovation to make the children’s room a bright and comfortable place for them to not only sleep, but keep their things in order, play, and do homework. Having an L shaped bunk bed can be a solution in efficient space management as well as look great and be fun for kids to have.

Lawn Care : Aeration and Dethatching Are Important

The Lawn Bible lawn care book

The Lawn Bible lawn care book

If you want a beautiful lawn there are couple of maintenance tasks that you need to take care of on a regular basis, notable aerating you lawn and removing thatch.

Aerating Your lawn

Why is lawn aeration? Lawns like humans need to breathe. Every time you step on your lawn to mow grass or even allow your children to play on the grounds, the lawn soil becomes compacted and this removes pockets of air in the soil around the roots of the grass. Aerated soil helps promote the healthy population of microorganisms.

So how does aerating your lawn work?

A lawn aerator removes small soil plugs from the lawn allowing the soil to expand into the empty spaces as the grass grows. The amount of aerating you need to do depends on the type of soil and how compacted it is. If your lawn is clay based soil, you should aerate it at least twice a year to avoid soil compaction.

It is best to rent an aerating machine as you will only need it once or a couple of times a year or if you don’t want to do this work yourself, talk to a lawn service company. To reduce the cost, you can ask your neighbor to share with you the expenses as both of you will benefit from the aerating process.

Make sure that any machine you choose really removes the soil plug otherwise it will just contribute to soil compaction if you run over your lawn with heavy equipment

Lawn aeration does not make your lawn look immediately better but you will see the results over the following months with healthier grass.

After aerating your lawn, remove the plugs of soil from the lawn to improve the look of your lawn.

Removing thatch

Thatch refers to the layer of dead grass that is growing in your lawn. This layer tends to build up and damage the living grass. Dethatching gets rid of any harmful build up which can block water, sunlight and any elements essential for the growing of plants. It also gets rid of any weak substandard grass.

The thatch layer is where many insects are found (it provides a warm layer of material). Regular thatching can prevent insect infestations, which can damage grass.

What tools should be used in thatching?

You can do lawn thatching with the use of a thatch rake and you just have to run the rake over the grass and gather up the thatch that you retrieve. Do thsi ever month or so for best results.

Clearing thatch helps to filter the soil so that it is ideal for planting and reseeding lawns where required.

The Pros and Cons of Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring

bamboo in its natural state

bamboo in its natural state

Sustainable flooring has recently gained attention as a way to conserve precious resources such as hardwood trees. It is also favored because it offers better protection against allergens than traditional floor coverings such as carpet which contains glue that give off VOCs.

Perhaps the most popular form of sustainable flooring is strand woven bamboo flooring.

To make strand woven bamboo flooring, mature moso bamboo, normally from Guangdong Province in China, is cut into strips and left to dry. Then it is boiled to remove sugars that attract termites. Then it is compressed under heat with a low VOC adhesive. The result is a solid block of bamboo that looks like timber. This is taken away and cut into flooring planks often with tongue and groove joints.

Because bamboo reaches maturity in just 5 to 7 years it is considered a renewable resource. Bamboo is easy to grow: it propagates through a root system so doesn’t need to be planted; it requires less water than trees and it can flourish without pesticides and fertilizers because it has a natural resistance to pests and pathogens.

Strand woven bamboo makes excellent flooring because it is very strong. It has a Janka Hardness Rating when it is finished with aluminum oxide of nearly 3,000 pounds force, making it harder than most hardwoods domestic to North America.

Also strand woven bamboo flooring has a grain and looks like hardwood flooring. It comes in a light natural color and darker carbonized shades. Because the color is produced by heating the bamboo to caramelize the remaining sugars the color is all the way through. So when strand woven bamboo is sanded down the color remains.

The main downsides of this flooring are to do with its production. Although bamboo is a very earth friendly resource it is often grown by clear cutting areas of wild habitat in the forests of Southern China and harvests are artificially boosted by the use of fertilizers. Overseeing bodies have limited access to agriculture in China and so it is difficult to certify that a bamboo product is environmentally friendly.

Similarly, despite China being a worker’s democracy there is little chance of the government operating fair trade programs in the bamboo sector to protect the rights of workers.

If the center of bamboo production could be moved beyond the borders of China to an area where experts in sustainability are helped not hindered then perhaps I would not be able to write this article since there would be no cons to strand woven bamboo flooring to write about.

Choosing the Right Yellow Kitchen Curtains

Yellow is the color of the sun, the color of the sand. It reminds us of a beautiful sunny day at the beach or of the country side. At home it’s often a color you see in the kitchen, especially for curtains. Yellow lights up the room and makes people feel comfortable. Before you go and buy yellow kitchen curtains, you may want to read this small guide to help you make the right choice.

If yellow is already part of your color scheme in the kitchen, then you need to be careful and choose the right tone and pattern for your kitchen curtains, or you’ll end up clashing yellows. Yellow can be found in many shades. If your kitchen already has a pale yellow on the wall or cabinets, it’s a good idea to go for a darker tone on the curtains, like a sunflower yellow. If on the other the decor is in darker shades, the curtains may be in a pale lemon meringue or a light canary yellow.

As for the pattern, much like the color, it should blend in with the kitchen decoration. If your decor is already full of twists and turns, it’s a good idea to choose plain yellow curtains. But if the decoration is simple, you can choose a curtain design with embellishing country elements, such as roosters, fruits and vegetables, flower motifs, farm animals, watering cans and even cutlery motifs.

Now that you have the color and shade decided it’s important that you know exactly what you want in terms of style. If you enjoy looking outside the window while cooking or eating, consider purchasing window valances or café curtains.

The former don’t cover up your window but still make it stylish, whereas the latter only cover the lower part of the window, letting sunlight brighten up the room and allowing you to keep your view. If you choose the valances, bear in mind that people will be able to look inside your kitchen just as much as you can look outside. So you can decide to buy a set of curtain panels to go with the valances and restrict the view a little bit. Whatever style you choose, make sure it works both for your privacy and view. Otherwise you might be spending money and soon regret your choice. So take your time to decide.

Finally, choose the fabric for your curtains. A quality fabric would be one that doesn’t sag or droop and that is also easy to wash. Grease and dust continually accumulate on kitchen curtains. So the simpler the material, the easier it is to clean. Fabrics like lace or others with frills tend to lodge more dirt and it can be a problem to keep them neat.

With these things in mind, you can start looking for the perfect kitchen curtains, either online or at local stores and warehouses. Whatever you choose, you can be sure that yellow kitchen curtains are a good investment as yellow will not go out of fashion anytime soon.
