How To Brew Good Coffee with French Press Coffee Makers

Bodum Chambord French Coffee Press

Bodum Chambord French Coffee Press CLICK IMAGE for details

As there are many different types of coffee makers on the market today, it seems a little troublesome to try your hand on the coffee brewers when there are many other automatic coffee machines and single cup coffee makers out there that can take care of the entire brewing session. However, the truth is that nothing beats brewing a cup of good coffee out of your own hands, and French press coffee makers are a good way to start.

The first way way to brew a good cup of coffee is to use good quality ground coffee. If you are grinding your own coffee, make sure that the setting is switched to coarse grind and use a burr grinder.

The coarse ground coffee takes a longer time to brew and the water can extract more flavor out of the coffee. It also ensures an even extraction from the ground coffee.

After you have settled on the coffee, you can now start the brewing process. How do you know how much coffee to use? Just measure the capacity of the French press and allocate one tablespoon of coffee to four ounces of water. That is the recommended ration but you can still change it to suit your preference.

The brewing water must also be boiled to a certain temperature and there is a shortcut to obtain the most ideal temperature. Boil a whole pot of water in a kettle and let it cool for one minute before pouring the water into the French press.

When the French press is filled with water, you’ll have to wait for four minutes before the coffee is ready. After one minute, stir the coffee to ensure even extraction and then cover the coffee with the press lid. Now, after covering the coffee, wait for the four minutes to be up and you can now press the presser to trap the coffee sediments at the bottom of the flask. You are now ready to pour and serve your coffee.

Kitchen Knives: When Should I Hone And When Should I Sharpen?

Wusthof Classic Knife Range

Wusthof Classic Knife Range CLICK IMAGE for details

With the amount of cooking programs on television these days everyone thinks that they’re a fantastic chef and keep trying out new ideas and new utensils.

One of the first items many budding chefs buy is a set of high quality kitchen knives, such as those made by the German Wusthof company. Their Classic knife range really are top quality knives.

But these new chefs don’t know how to keep their knives in great shape. They are under the misapprehension that knives should be sharpened regularly and nothing could be further from the truth.

Good knives will hold an edge for many months and will not need sharpening. However, what they will need is honing. This is best done whenever the knife is used.

Let’s explain a little.

Sharpening is a destructive process that reset the edge of the knife, and every time that you do it a small amount of blade material is removed. Obviously, if you do this too often then it will drastically reduce the life of the knife.

So what is honing?

When you use your knife and the edge comes into contact with a hard surface its edge is forced to roll under itself a little. With every subsequent cut this will get worse. This leads us to the obvious conclusion that you should try and use chopping boards that are as soft as possible. So use a wooden or plastic board, not metal or glass. And this will prolong the edge of the knife.

Eventually, however, even honing will not be able to get a good cutting edge. It is at this point that the edge has become more than rolled over, it has become blunt.

Now, it needs sharpening and not before. With higher quality knives you are going to find that normal sharpeners are not going to be up to the job of resetting the edge on the toughened steel.

You are going to need a quality sharpener like the Chef’s Choice 130 model to get the job done.

With proper honing and sharpening your knives could last you a lifetime.

Great Ways to Increase Your Fruit and Vegetable Intake

The Farmers Market Cookbook

The Farmer's Market Cookbook: More Than 100 Recipes Using the Freshest Ingredients

One of the first things that any nutritionist or dietitian will tell you is that North Americans need to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Before you start groaning and making comments about rabbit food, take a look at these quick and easy ways to add fruit to your family’s meal plan.

Fruits and vegetables are a lot more fun for kids and adults to eat if they can be dipped in something or have a yummy sauce drizzled over them.

Try serving vegetable sticks or fruit kabobs with yogurt dressings.  The creamy texture of yogurt pairs well with fruit, and can be sweetened with a tablespoon of honey.

Try a yogurt dressing instead of the traditional sour cream one used with potato salad or spinach salad.

Yogurt only needs a little lemon or lime juice and a pinch of curry powder to make a quick and easy dip for red, green, and yellow pepper and cucumber.

Serve a fruit or vegetable tray with a low fat dressing instead of the chips and dip that you normally serve when you have people over to watch a big game, or as munchies at a barbecue.

Most people think of a vegetable salad and a fruit salad as two different things.  One is served as a side dish or main dish for a light lunch or dinner, the other is for dessert or sometimes breakfast.

Fruits and vegetables can complement each other very well, especially when the sweetness of the fruit cuts the bitterness of a leafy green.

This arugula salad recipe is the perfect example as the strawberries pair perfectly with the bitter crispness of the arugula.  Other fruits to try include raspberries or mandarin oranges.

By keeping the dressing light with a tangy citrus flavor, this salad is a low fat and flavorful way to get a few good servings of fruits and vegetables into your day.

Buying a Stainless Steel Juicer

With spring in the air, there’s always the desire to be more active and healthy. What better way to start than by juicing fresh fruits and vegetables every morning to start your day? If you’re interested in buying a stainless steel juicer, then this article will provide a basic guide to help you pick the best juicer for your dollar.

First of all, one of the perks of buying a juicer with stainless steel parts is that it makes the cleanup process a lot better. Stainless steel components can be placed in a dishwasher along with your normal dishes and washed without any special attention or care.

This is a big perk as manually cleaning the juicing parts by hand is a pain – not to mention a bit of a hazard, since there are some sharp parts in there!

So a huge thing you want to remember is the you’re already on the right path by choosing stainless steel since it’s the best type of juicer as far as cleaning up goes.

Secondly you should figure out how much money you’re willing to spend for your juicer.

Do you think you’ll just use it occasionally or more like every day? Or perhaps twice a day or only twice a week? Is there a good chance you’ll use it for only a couple weeks or maybe just this summer and then it will go into storage?

The answers to these questions will guide you as to how much money it’s worth it to spend on your stainless steel juicer.

Third, you should think about what you really want to juice. If you’re only going to be into carrots, you might want to buy a carrot juicer instead of an all purpose fruit and vegetable juicer.

If you plan to do a lot of wheatgrass shots, you should make sure your machine has a good reputation for extracting juice from grasses. Extend this logic out to whatever you think you’ll enjoy juicing the most and it will help guide you as to the best machine for your needs.

Not sure what to get? In that case I would recommend the Breville Juice Fountain Elite (see image above) It has great reviews and although expensive you can get a huge discount just now making it more affordable.

Once you get your machine, don’t be afraid to experiment with a number of different vegetables and fruits.

Try different combinations of  fruits like carrots, apples, pears, and bananas, mixed with different vegetables such as cucumber and beets. Also don’t be shy about adding in some greens! This will make your drinks a nutritional powerhouse. My favorite combination is organic baby leaf spinach, cabbage, and romaine lettuce.

Add a touch of ginger to a kick of sweetness into any drink that’s otherwise to dull, bland, or bitter. If you have access to shaved ice, it makes a nice touch to throw a bit on the top – not only for taste but also for presentation!

How to Cook Brown Rice

Eating brown rice is a better and healthier choice over normal white rice since it offers more healthy benefits and such as greater fiber intake, lowered cholesterol, and may also help reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes according to a recent finding published on WebMD.

But for many folks, cooking brown rice seems to be a bit of a challenge with unwanted crunchy results since the grain is “harder” due to more bran layers and is not as simple as the easy “123″ method of cooking white rice (1 cup raw + 2 cups water = 3 cups cooked).

However, below are three tips to help ensure a better textured and better tasting batch of brown rice.

Using a Stove Pot for Soaking, Cooking, and Steaming

People who use a normal stove pot to cook brown rice experience the most issues. But many miss one of the most important steps which is first soaking the brown rice before cooking it. Brown rice retains its bran layers as opposed to white rice that had them polished off. Before cooking, you need to allow water to penetrate these tough bran layers to both release more nutrients when cooking and for developing better rice texture.
A good soaking time is anywhere between 30 minutes to a full hour, depending on the grain. When using Carolina brand long grain brown rice, soak an hour. For Uncle Bens par boiled rice, soak 30 minutes.
Follow the measuring instructions on the package, bring to a boil on a medium flame, cover, then decrease to a low flame until most of the water has evaporated, (little “craters” should form). At this point give a quick stir and reduce flame to a very low heat for a minute or two, shut off flame and steam for 10 to 15 minutes covered. Season with salt and serve.

Cooking Brown Rice Like Pasta

Another great method for achieving good standard quality brown rice using a stove pot is to simply cook it as you would pasta…just longer. This quicker method although great does require much more water than normal and of course a larger pot. First rinse the brown rice, but do not soak! For every cup of brown rice you wish to make, measure 10 cups of water and bring to a rapid boil. Once boiling, add the brown rice, reduce flame to a medium heat and cook for 30 minutes uncovered; (starchy foam may be visible on top which is normal). Pour into a strainer, shake most of the excess water out and return to pot. Cover and let steam for 10 to 15 minutes. Season, serve, and enjoy.

Best Method – Using a Fuzzy Logic Rice Cooker

The last method and probably the best for obtaining the highest quality rice texture possible is to invest in a Fuzzy Logic rice cooker. Brands like Zojirushi, Sanyo, and Panasonic are all great and worth considering. What “Fuzzy Logic” means is that the rice cooker has an internal monitoring computer that is specifically programmed to “pay attention” to how the rice is cooking making fine adjustments in temperature and cooking times along the way. Furthermore, all Fuzzy Logic rice cookers automatically soak the rice before starting the cooking process, so there may be an hour delay before anything happens – don’t worry your cooker is not broken. Such cookers also offer the user specific rice settings, so you need to first decide which variety they wish to cook before pressing the start button, (in this case it would be brown rice). The more common on board varieties are: white rice, brown rice, mixed rice, sushi, and sweet rice, (this varies depending on brand/model). Each cooker comes with a special measuring cup and specific instructions on how to operate the cooker for achieving maximum rice quality and flavor. Good models to consider are the Sanyo ECJ-HC100S or the Zojirushi NS-ZCC10.

So, the next time you’re in the mood for a healthy cup of brown rice, using one of the above methods should result in a satisfying meal.

Is A Stand Mixer Strong Enough To Knead Bread Dough?

Do you sometime wish that there was an easier way to knead your dough? It could be for a standard loaf, it could be for a ciabatta or it could be for a whole new creation of bread that you have made up all by yourself. Whatever you enjoy baking, you know that it takes time and effort to knead it right.

So how can you speed up this process? How can you get the perfectly kneaded dough you want every single time? With a stand mixer of course!

When you first look at buying stand mixers, it can be really hard to know which one to go for.

Do you choose the one with the highest speeds? Do you go for the cheapest one? All of these things can factor into the problem but it doesn’t always mean that you get the right mixer for you.

Sometimes you have to take a look at the kinds of things you are going to be baking so that you can get the right mixer for your needs. If you are a big fan of baking bread, then there are several functions and additions that you are going to want to look out for in a stand mixer. But what are these functions and how can you be sure you are getting the right deal for your money?

The first thing that you have to look out for is a dough hook. Almost all mixers have a dough hook as an attachment but you also need to look at the quality of this hook. If it is plastic then it will break within minutes of kneading. If it is stainless steel or thick metal then it is likely to withstand any density of dough.

You should also take into consideration the power behind the motor in the stand mixer. A strong and powerful motor like many found in Kitchenaid equipment is likely to knead your dough properly and save you a lot of arm ache! In the kitchenaid ksm150 review, they discuss the fact that the motor is 300 watts and can knead dough to perfection.

When you combine this with the 10 speed options that it has and you really can make the perfect bread. Don’t forget that you also need a high powered motor for creaming butter properly too so be sure to read the full product description before buying.

If you want to find the right kind of mixer for your baking needs but aren’t sure what sort of functions and specifications you need, why not take a look at some home products reports that can offer you guidance and advice on how to find the right mixer for you.

Wood Kitchen Worktop

There is much talk about work surfaces in the news and how essential it is to keep them clean to fight germs and bacteria.  This is especially true if you are going to be placing uncooked meat like chicken or pork on the surface.  These are very safe meats after cooking, but they can spread some germs in their raw state.  After handling these meats, you should regularly wash your work surfaces and utensils with soap and water.

This opens up another question.  Some individuals argue that a kitchen worktop made of wood is not safe as they are difficult to clean which is not true for two reasons.

First of all, a wooden counter top is going to be sealed on the surface to safe guard it from moisture and this would protect it from germs as well.  The sealant will not allow any unsafe materials or liquids to pass through to the wood.

In fact, you have to keep your sealer in good condition for complete protection.  It is paramount that either you or a contractor do a light sanding and apply a fresh coat of sealant every year.

Another fact about wood, and this is actually amusing, is that it really has an antiseptic quality. Specifically, oak wood has the potential to protect from germs and this is one reason that it was used for barrels in the ancient times.

Obviously, you still want to maintain your oak worktop clean, though you do have this natural increased protection.

Actually this works so well that in most old butcher shops the butcher’s block was never cleaned. Alternatively, it was scraped off each night with a sharp scraper to wipe out the fats and left for the following day’s meat cutting.  The antiseptic properties of the block maintained its safety.

If you are searching for a good material to build worktops for your renovated kitchen then do not be discouraged by wood.  It has been used in kitchens for years with no negative outcomes.

Cupcakes for a Potluck : Use Cupcake Boxes

cupcake boxes

Cupcake Boxes (CLICK IMAGE FOR SELECTION)

If you have been invited to a potluck dinner and you want to take a dessert, why not take cupcakes?

It is one of the easiest foods to prepare, and you can even decorate them with a special theme if necessary, such as Halloween or Easter.

The only problem is carrying them to the potluck if you need to transport them, but we have an answer for that!

To transport the cupcakes, you can use a specially designed box. Cupcake boxes have become increasingly popular, to coincide with the recent rise in popularity that cupcakes have experienced.

Cupcakes are in all the rage in the United States at the moment, with little shops popping up in small town and large cities across the country, dedicated to the formerly humble cupcake. Cupcakes are now available in styles from plain to fancy, and a wide assortment of decorations are available to help you make your cupcakes look fantastic.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with buying your cupcakes already made and decorated for you!

If you buy them, they are likely to come in a special box that holds them individually separated so they don’t collide with each other and get messed up during transport, but if you are making your own cupcakes at home, you might want to invest in a special box just for the cupcakes.

These boxes are available for one time use or as permanent boxes similar to Tupperware.

If you want to make your cupcakes even more impressive, you can wrap them in cupcake wrappers.

These are little strips of paper that wrap around and attach to themselves to create a little cup. To use them, you simply place the decorated cupcake inside. This is meant to cover up the unattractive liner in which the cupcake is baked, and it gives the cupcakes a “finished” look.

As simple as combining steamed milk with an espresso shot, the cappuccino is taking the world by storm. Maybe it is the popularity of neighborhood coffee shops or the influence of West coast culture, but the cappuccino is growing in popularity. Several black coffee patrons are making the switch to the creamy and heavily caffeinated cappuccino.

Did you know that one of the purposes of cappuccino foam is to help insulate your drink from getting cold? The cappuccino is made with an aerating funnel that allows for the milk to be steamed and then used to make foam. If you add a larger portion of steamed milk to your cappuccino, then what you really have is a latte.

If you were to buy a cappuccino at a coffee shop, then you might have to spend as much as five dollars.

That’s quite a bit of money, especially when you can buy an espresso machine for under a hundred dollars.

Many people who love to drink cappuccinos have these home espresso makers to help save them money.

If you are spending hundreds of dollars on cappuccinos at your local coffee shop, then you should consider buying your own espresso machine.

You might feel that you don’t have time to prepare your espresso machine. Well, there are fully automatic espresso machines that will make your coffee from start to finish. They will even grind the beans and self rinse.

An espresso machine is a great investment. It allows you the freedom to enjoy a cappuccino whenever you like. It helps save you money by avoiding overpriced coffee at shops.

Also, you can make better tasting coffees at home by selecting your own beans and milks. These are just a few of several benefits of having your own espresso machine at home. Save money having an automatic espresso machine or Nespresso le cube at home.
