There are many causes of acne, pimples, or blemishes. They can be caused by sweat clogging the pores or over production of oil from the sebaceous glands. Bacteria can begin to grow in our pores causing an internal battle with our immune system. Even stress and hormones are attributed as a factor that influences breakouts. There are so many causes and thus there are so many acne products.
When we go to pick up that pimple cream that is going to help us keep our skin clear of dirt, oil, or dead skin cells we may notice that there are two different active ingredients. Some acne treatments boast they have 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide, while others may claim they use 5% Salicylic Acid. We will take a look at each of these ingredients to figure out which one will work best for us.
Benzoyl Peroxide is the most commonly used ingredient we will see in pimple creams. This chemical works like those little scrubbing bubbles do on the commercials, only for your skin instead of for the shower. Benzoyl Peroxide dries up oily skin and kills the bacteria that can live inside the pores.
The downside is that this ingredient can be a bit harsh on skin types that are already notorious for being dry or sensitive. In that case the active ingredient of choice should be Salicylic Acid.
Salicylic Acid is gentler on skin than Benzoyl Peroxide and it can do pretty close to the same job.
This active ingredient works by helping the skin shed its dead skin cells more readily allowing for newer skin cells to grow.
This constant regeneration helps to keep the skin looking fresh and vibrant. It also helps to keep the dirt and oil from caking onto the skin. This in return helps to keep the pores clear of excess debris.
One common factor of acne is that when pores become clogged, breakouts follow. It may just be a blackhead, which is dirt and debris or it could be a pustule that is waiting to burst.
No matter what type of acne it is or what it may become keeping the skin and pores clean is very important to prevent these unsightly breakouts.
